Meet A Star Teacher
Name: Kathrin Hughes
Grade: Fifth
Background: I have a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education and a master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction.
How long have you been teaching?
Prior to teaching at Marvin, I taught a year in Iowa and seven years in Greenwich, CT. This is my 28th year of teaching at Marvin. All those years, but 4, I have taught 5th grade. I taught 3rd grade for 4 years.
What do you love about teaching fifth grade?
I love teaching 5th grade! It is exciting and rewarding to be part of a fifth-grade students' year as each grows readying themselves to leave elementary school and preparing for middle school. l love when students become excited about reading and learning new things. Many discussions with fifth graders about insights and knowledge into topics they are learning have left me inspired and excited about each new day in the classroom. Over the years I have been privileged to continue being in contact with many students and families and it makes living in our community very special. I have become privileged to have children of my previous students, and that is extra special.
What is your favorite lesson or subject to teach?
I love teaching reading and inspiring students to love reading books and to become lifelong readers. I also love teaching Social Studies and my favorite topic is Colonial America.
Fun facts about you!
I grew up in Kansas and Wyoming. I came from a musical family and played the trombone, bassoon and piano as well as being a part of many singing groups. I used to ride horses a lot and it is by far my favorite animal.
Who is in this picture with you?
The picture is of me and my 16-year-old granddaughter, Kayla, who has my heart completely.
We know how hard teachers are working this year. What can parents do to help you?
I believe parents, in this difficult time, are doing all they can to be a support for their children. Continue to support and encourage your children with talks, love, and lots of hugs.
What we love about Mrs. Hughes!
"Mrs. Hughes was my fifth grade teacher. She really helped me come out of my shell as a new student at Marvin. I'm so thankful I had her!
- Ericka Restrepo, former student & current Marvin PTA Executive Board Member (maiden name Molina)
“She’s a really good teacher, and that’s because she teaches her lessons very well, and she is nice to us as her students. She is firm, but not too strict. She makes ELA and social studies interesting. She sets a high standard to prepare us for 6th grade.”
- Daniel Church, current student
Thank you, Mrs. Hughes, for all you do for Marvin students!
